Distinctive Features of the Imperial Plaza: Completed in 1957 as the headquarters for Imperial Oil, it was the tallest building in Toronto at the time and because it sits atop of the escarpment it offers commanding views of the the city, lake and beyond. On a clear day one can see the mist from Niagara Falls. No expense was spared in creating the finest modern office building of its time with clean lines and bare bones simplicity. The exterior is clad in limestone with aluminum and bronzed window casements. Cognizant of building in high end residential neighbourhood, riveting steel pieces together on site to erect the steel frame would be too noisy so the builders opted for the more costly welded-frame technique making the Imperial Oil Building the largest all-welded steel frame structure in the world. Built at the height of the Cold War, so robust is the Imperial Oil Building that it was designed to be utilized as an alternative hospital or bomb shelter in case of nuclear attack. The grand two storey marble and granite lobby features gold mosaic inlay tiles and is dominated by R. York Wilson's mural "The Story of Oil". A masterpiece of Canadian art, "The Story of Oil" is actually two paintings, with the east mural depicting the prehistoric origins of oil and the west mural depicting modern uses of oil.

In converting the Imperial Oil building into the residential condominium community of Imperial Plaza, balconies will be created on the south side of the building and the mechanical level on the 8th floor will be converted into two storey loft apartments. The top of the building currently features an observation level on the 20th floor and a two storey glazed curtain wall mechanical pavilion above it which will be transformed into 6 three-storey townhouses with deep terraces. Spacious original ceilings will allow the developers to place ducts and other mechanicals out of sight without the use of annoying bulkheads. All suites will feature minimum ten foot high smooth painted ceilings and south facing units on the 9th floor and above with two or more bedrooms will have balconies. Suite sizes start with the smallest one bedrooms of 480 square feet and go up to largest suites of the 3 storey penthouses.
